Test Drives: 2001 Honda S2000

Yet another sports car to try. The Honda S2000 Roadster plays ball in the same league as the BMW Z, Mercedes-Benz SLK, Porsche Boxster, Audi TT, and Corvette. I enjoyed a drive down Wellington Crescent, sampling the curves, straights, and bumps of the twisty scenic route. Immediately, I was reminded of my trip with a Porsche Boxster down the same road a few months earlier. The Honda has a sport suspension that, coupled with its low stance, gives it a thrilling ride and 'go faster' persona. The interior uses quality materials that compliment the Honda image. While getting in and out of the car is a struggle, comfort levels are surprisingly high inside, both from the cockpit and passenger seats. Unique features to the Honda include a push-button starter, short- shift 6-speed manual, tachometer-bar, and thoughtful placement of switches and buttons. A power top stows the softtop in a matter of seconds, after unlatching at both ends. A hardtop option is expense but important if this is your only car. Although the top takes two to remove, it can be done in an easy minute.
Once started, the engine begs to be revved high. Don't feel scared to rev this engine up to 9000rpm. That's where the power is. Just be careful not to expect this high-revving capability of any other car.
