Test Drives: 2002 Jaguar X-Type 2.5

|
Jaguar is getting serious about competing with BMW, Lexus, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz with the introduction of the X-Type. This particular X-Type was a fully loaded 2.5L V6, save for the Sport Package. There is no mistaking this car for anything but a Jag. It combines the front end of the XJ-Series and the rear of the S-Type. Inside, the Jaguar family similarities continue. The traditional J-gate automatic shift lever is present, as is the soothing combination of leather and wood accents. This is definitely the most ergonomic interior of any Jaguar out there. It is good to see Jaguar didn't shave off costs by cheapening the interior materials. The ride was not anything special though. Perhaps this is a result of the smaller engine and non-Sport equipped vehicle. After seeing the press photos of the X-Type in Sport Package trim, it is difficult to accept the base model with its excessive chrome trim and bland 16-inch wheels. An opportunity to test the all-wheel drive system was not possible on a warm summer day in Winnipeg; however, when winter rears its ugly head, perhaps the benefits of buying an X-Type will pay off. Even with Jaguar and BMWs new all-wheel drive offerings, it will be extremely difficult to de-throne Audi's strong lead in Winnipeg's entry-level luxury car market.
